IDA NorCal is thrilled t
o host this 3-hour Workshop by two respected Bay Area leaders in reading i
nstruction and research. This workshop will deepen participants’ understan
ding of fluency and the science of reading and will cover the following co
ntent:
\n\n- contrast the MSV model of instruction (common in Balanced Literacy m
aterials) with the Four-Part Processing Model (aligned with the science of
reading)
\n
\n\n- unpack the shifts necessary to transition from Balanced L
iteracy to evidence based instruction
\n
\n\n- <
span data-key='154'>explore reading fluency\; how its acquired\, taught\,
and assessed
\n
\nPresented by:
\nMargaret Goldberg currently teaches first grade in a Title 1 school in Oakland\, Calif
ornia. She previously served the district in a variety of roles including
Early Literacy Lead\, site-based literacy coach\, and reading intervention
ist. Her work leading a grant-funded project to align reading instruction
with reading research was featured in the APM Reports documentary At a Los
s for Words. She is the co-founder of The Right to Read Project\, a group
of teachers\, researchers\, and activists committed to the pursuit of equi
ty through literacy. Her writing is published on The Right to Read Project blog and on Readi
ng Rockets.

\nLani Mednick<
/strong> is currently the Assistant Principal of Instruction at Ascend\, a
TK-8th grade Title 1 school in Oakland\, California. She was previously a
teacher of students in TK-6th\, a reading interventionist\, and an Early
Literacy Lead of a grant-funded Early Literacy Cohort in Oakland Unified (
with Margaret). She has supported district leads\, principals\, coaches\,
teachers and tutors in systematically bringing reading research to practic
e in classrooms – keeping student outcomes at the center. She joined The Right to Read Project because she firmly believes that learning to read is
a civil right and works to give as many students equitable access to this
right. You can hear her in podcasts\, such as the APM Reports documentary
At a Loss for Words and Amplify’s Science of Reading Podcast.

rks as a Reading Specialist at Town School for Boys in San Francisco. She
also has a private practice where she works with students who have languag
e-based challenges. She previously worked as a 3rd and 4th Grade Teacher a
t North Bridge Academy. She holds a Certificate in Education Therapy from
Holy Names University\, a Master’s in Education from the Harvard Graduate
School of Education\, and a B.A. in Psychology and Education from Mount Ho
lyoke College.

his portion of the webinar will cover commonly asked questions regarding s
