Orton‐Gillingham Approach: A Teacher/Tutor/Parent Workshop for Dyslexia and Literacy Instruction

This introductory course will familiarize participants with the signs and symptoms of dyslexia, as well as the tenets of the Orton‐Gillingham approach to literacy instruction. It meets the requirements of the Subscriber Course of the Academy. Topics will include:

  • Neurological basis of dyslexia and reading disorders
  • Efficacy of structured, sequential, multisensory literacy instruction The foundations and history of the Orton‐Gillingham Approach
  • Phonological and phonemic awareness
  • Stages of Reading and Spelling Development
  • The design and rational of the OG lesson plan
  • Case studies and sample lessons
  • History and Structure of English Language

About Meyers Learning Center:

Meyers Learning Center offers private tutoring to a diverse student population, from elementary to adult‐age students. Our experienced, reliable, and caring educators individualize their teaching to each student’s needs. Tutoring occurs at our downtown Los Altos learning center, in students’ homes, at another convenient location (e.g., school or library), or online. In addition, we provide workshops, school programs, and presentations to community audiences.

Nancy Redding, M.Ed., is a Fellow‐in‐Training with AOGPE. She has 40 years of experience with OG, both in tutoring students of all ages, and in conducting teacher training. She has worked as a learning specialist at the elementary, high school, and college levels. Nancy is the co‐author along with Marcia Henry, of Patterns for Success, an OG based reading and spelling program designed as a supplement to OG instruction. She has presented at many workshops and conference and has been active in International Dyslexia Association, both on the local and national levels.

Chartwell School and the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators: Teacher/Tutor Training For Dyslexia and Literacy @ Chartwell School

Orton-Gillingham is a research based sequential, multisensory method proven effective for over 80 years. The 32 hour course achieves the Classroom Educator certification to prepare teachers for implementing the Orton-Gillingham approach.

The 4 day training, totaling 32 hours, will be held on the following dates:

  • Friday, September 8th
  • Saturday, September 9th
  • Friday, September 22nd
  • Saturday, September 23rd
  • 8:30a.m. to 5:00p.m.
  • Continental Breakfast and Lunch will be provided.

Course will be taught by Nancy Redding, M.Ed, a Fellow-In-Training with the Association of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators.

Topics Include

  • Dyslexia and related reading disorders
  • Stages of reading development in children
  • Rationale of the Orton-Gillingham Approach
  • Phonology and phonological awareness
  • Basic and intermediate phonics for reading and spelling
  • The motor component and the writing process
  • General history of the English language and beginningmorphology
  • The lesson plan and teaching materials
  • Assessment and diagnostic-prescriptive teaching

About Nancy Redding:

Nancy Redding, M.Ed. is a Fellow-In-Training with AOGPE. Shehas 40 years of experience with OG, both in academic therapywith students of all ages, and in conducting teacher training.She has been a learning specialist at the elementary, highschool and community college levels. The Registration Fee includes two Training Manuals. Lunch isprovided. You will need to bring some supplies for note takingand organizing information. A list of required readings andsupplies is provided upon registration.

This 4 day training does not provide a practicum, which isrequired to complete the Classroom Educator certification fromAOGPE; the practicum will be arranged separately for thosedesiring certification.

What is the Academy of Orton-GillinghamPractitioners and Educators?

Speech-Language Pathology Continuing Education Course: Using the CTOPP-2 to Assess Phonological Processing for Reading Disability/Dyslexia Evaluations

Speech-Language Pathology alumni and friends are invited to this special Homecoming weekend continuing education program. During this three-hour program, speaker Richard “Rick” K. Wagner, PhD, a professor of psychology at Florida State University, will dispel old myths and present new truths about dyslexia, followed by a brief review of the just-released California dyslexia guidelines. Then, use of the CTOPP-2 for assessing phonological processing in the context of reading disability/dyslexia evaluations will be covered.

All participants will receive a certificate of attendance and a continental breakfast.

There are two program options available to meet your needs. During the Morning Intensive, Chartwell faculty will train you to implement the successful methods that we have honed during the past three decades.

The Afternoon Practicum presents an opportunity for hands-on experience with struggling readers under the guidance of a Chartwell Master Teacher. Educators enrolled in the Afternoon Practicum will have the unique opportunity to practice their newly-acquired conceptual and foundational knowledge in an actual classroom setting while students will be able to benefit from a one-on-one reading tutorial and significantly increase reading strategies. This approach is known as The Chartwell Way.

You will earn a Chartwell Structured Literacy Certificate and Continuing Education Credits.

Wilson Just Words® 2018 Workshop @ Courtyard Marriott, Sherman Oaks

Just Words® is an intervention (Tier 2) program for students in grades 4-12 and adults.  It provides direct and explicit teaching of “how English works“ for both decoding and spelling automaticity. The multisensory approach is designed for individuals who have mild to moderate gaps in their decoding and spelling proficiency but do not require intensive intervention. It provides a curricculm for the sophisticated study of word structure through the six syllable types in English and the most common Latin roots. Just Words is an appropriate intervention in daily small-group or small-class instruction.

This 10-hour workshop, co-sponsored by IDA-Los Angeles, provides the practice and guidance needed to effectively begin teaching the Wilson Just Words® curriculum. At the completion of the workshop, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the research base of the why and how of Just Words® instruction.
  • Understand the principles of instruction: explicit, sequential and cumulative instruction that incorporates review, repetition, feedback, and multisensory instruction to engage multiple learning styles.
  • Identify the skills taught in Just Words®: word study (phonemic awareness, six basic syllable types in English, spelling rules, common Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes), vocabulary study, and high frequency words.
  • Properly identify and group students.
  • Use the Instructor Manual’s Unit structure and materials, prepare a daily learning plan, and practice lesson activity procedures.
  • Administer Progress Checks at the beginning of each Unit and Unit Tests at the end in order to assess students’ progress.

2018 Orton-Gillingham Approach: Classroom Educator Workshop @ Los Altos Christian School

2018 Orton-Gillingham Approach:  Teacher/Tutor Training for Dyslexia and Literacy Instruction

Hosted by Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioner and Educators / Instructor: Nancy Redding, Fellow in Training

The OG Approach is for implementation in a classroom, or in small group or individual tutoring. Participants in this 40-hour course will be eligible for Classroom Educator Level certification from the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE).   To register, please email Nancy Redding:  nancy.c.redding@gmail.com.

For those desiring to be certified at the Associates Level, appropriate for 1–1 tutoring, this course will fulfill 40 of the 60 required hours of classroom instruction. The additional 20 hours will be taught July 9-11, 2018, at the same location for an additional cost.

Registration Closes June 10th. Class will close once full.

Fundations® Level Workshops provide the practice and guidance needed to effectively begin teaching the Fundations curriculum for the designated Level(s). The workshop includes: the principles of instruction; the skills taught in each Fundations level, including phonemic awareness, phonics and word study, vocabulary, high frequency words, fluency, comprehension, handwriting, spelling, and punctuation; and how to prepare a daily learning plan and practice lesson activity procedures.

These workshops are co-hosted by IDA- Los Angeles
