A one day, hands-on, special education workshop designed to meet the needs of parents and professionals serving children and teens with disabilities. Perfect for educators, healthcare providers, advocates and attorneys. This program is not disability or state specific.
Attention, teachers, parents, and anyone who has an interest in understanding dyslexia. Please join us for a learning disabilities simulation workshop on Saturday, February 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Stellar Academy for Dyslexics. This conference is designed for teachers, practitioners and parents to help them learn to identify, understand, and provide evidence-based teaching for students who have dyslexia and dyscalculia.Participants will learn the latest genetic studies as a basis for understanding current practices for assessment and intervention. The focus of these discussions will be for school-age students.

Are there students in your classroom that struggle with learning? Perhaps those students have a diagnosed or undiagnosed learning issue. In this teacher ed class, you will learn more about the types and signs of learning differences and the impact they can have on a student’s social and emotional well-being. Plan to attend so you can hear about classroom strategies that work and how you can create a supportive classroom environment for students with learning differences. Presented by Jeff Kozlowski, Head of Sand Hill School at CHC.
Jeff Kozlowski, Head of School
Jeff Kozlowski has over 20 years of experience as an educator and champion of students, families and teachers. Before joining Sand Hill School, Jeff was Head of School at Fusion Academy in Walnut Creek. For Jeff, kids have always come first, and he wanted to be a teacher early on. He holds a Bachelor of Science in history and in special education, and he has a Master’s degree in educational leadership. He has been a mentor, a teacher, a school principal and Head of School at several locations—Principal at New Haven Youth and Family Services in Southern California working with at-risk adolescent boys, Director of Special Education at The Winston School in San Diego working with bright kids with learning differences. Jeff supports the promise and potential of every child and believes that “Every student is carrying something you can’t see.”

2018 Summer Comprehensive Training Classes: Introductory and 3rd Levels
Wednesday – Friday, May 29, 30, 31 – 4:00 to 9:00 pm
Mondays – Fridays, June 6 to 29: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Only the introductory level and third level continuum classes will be offered on these dates. Pre-approval is required for all participants wishing to take the third level continuum class. Please contact the class instructor for approval using the email link above.
Register early and get the best value registration. Registration costs increase on May 1, 2018; online registration will be available through May 15, 2018.
Available Courses
Introductory Level Comprehensive Class
This class is the core of the Slingerland training program. It is traditionally offered as a four-week summer session and includes a practicum with students. It can also be adapted into a four to six week in-year class.
Class Content Includes:
- Instruction in the introductory steps of handwriting, written language, decoding and reading comprehension
- Knowledge of the historical and philosophical background of Specific Language Disability (dyslexia)
- The study of phonic rules and their application to encoding and decoding
- The neurology of language as a means of developing oral language skills The history, philosophy and current research in the field of dyslexia
- The relationship of curriculum and classroom organization to the language arts program
- Practice with multi-sensory teaching principles through daily work with children

Third Level Continuum Class
This four week class is designed for a limited number of participants wishing to become staff teachers in Slingerland multisenstory structured language training course. This class encompasses all learning in the introductory and second level classes as the participant learns how to organize, maintain and evaluate a summer session, its students and participants.
Participants may also enroll in the Third Level Continuum Class for more directed work with small groups of students. Daily lesson plans are developed to meet the needs of these students under the direction of the Slingerland Instructor.
Class Content Includes:
- The use of the Slingerland® Approach with a classroom group of children
- Evaluations of participant lesson plans, materials and teaching stations
- Evaluations of delivery of planned lessons Assisting with the completion of forms for the Slingerland® Institute
- Preparation and delivery of lectures to participants
- Preparation of an orientation about dyslexia and the Slingerland® Approach
- Individualized requirements assigned by the Director

The Chartwell Way: Structured Literacy Teacher Training Institute
There are two program options available to meet your needs. During the Morning Intensive, Chartwell faculty will train you to implement the successful methods that we have honed during the past three decades.
The Afternoon Practicum presents an opportunity for hands-on experience with struggling readers under the guidance of a Chartwell Master Teacher. Educators enrolled in the Afternoon Practicum will have the unique opportunity to practice their newly-acquired conceptual and foundational knowledge in an actual classroom setting while students will be able to benefit from a one-on-one reading tutorial and significantly increase reading strategies. This approach is known as The Chartwell Way.
You will earn a Chartwell Structured Literacy Certificate and Continuing Education Credits.
