SAVE THE DATE for the 2017 Summer Comprehensive Training Course. The dates for the course are June 28 – July 28. Tentative Course Times are:
– June 28: 1:00 to 8:00 pm
– July 5 – 28: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Only the second and third year continuum levels will be offered on these dates. No class on June 29, 30, July 3 or 4. Pre-approval is required for all participants wishing to take the third level continuum course. Please contact the course instructor using the email link above.

Available Courses
Second Level Continuum Course
Traditionally offered as a 4-week period of intensive study with a practicum. After a brief, basic review of the introductory course, participants will be introduced to and practice more advanced techniques in the language arts continuum. The use of the dictation paragraph and the screening procedures for identifying students will also be presented.
Course Content Includes:
- Guided observation of the evaluative and prescriptive elements imbedded in the daily plan Knowledge of how oral language skills relate to writing and reading skills
- Studying the vertical and horizontal use of the format for instruction
- How to integrate a new learning throughout the format
- Critical thinking skills needed for reading, writing and speaking
- Current research in all aspects of dyslexia
- How to administer and evaluate the Slingerland Screening materials

Third Level Continuum Course
This four week course is designed for a limited number of participants wishing to become staff teachers in Slingerland training courses. This course encompasses all learning in the introductory and second level courses as the participant learns how to organize, maintain and evaluate a summer session, its students and participants.
Participants may also enroll in the Third Level Continuum Course for more directed work with small groups of students. Daily lesson plans are developed to meet the needs of these students under the direction of the Slingerland Director.
Third Year Continuum Course Content Includes:
- The use of the Slingerland® Approach with a classroom group of children
- Evaluations of participant lesson plans, materials and teaching stations
- Evaluations of delivery of planned lessons Assisting with the completion of forms for the Slingerland® Institute
- Preparation and delivery of lectures to participants
- Preparation of an orientation about dyslexia and the Slingerland® Approach
- Individualized requirements assigned by the Director

Dyslexia and Phonological Processing 1 hour Webinar
Join us for a FREE one-hour technical webinar on Dyslexia and Phonological Processing with emphasis on the use of the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP-2). Under new California Education Law, phonological processing is specifically listed as an area that should be assessed in determining Special Education eligibility.
This pre-recorded webinar will be presented by Dr. Richard Wagner, Ph.D., Principal Investigator of NICHD Florida Learning Disabilities Research Center, Associate Director, Florida Center for Reading Research and Co-Author of the CTOPP-2. Dr. Wagner is also a member of the CA Department of Education Dyslexia Work Group that is producing dyslexia guidelines to be released in August 2017. The CTOPP-2 is one of the most widely used and popular assessments for reading-related phonological processing skills.
This webinar is appropriate for psychologists, speech-language pathologists, special education teachers, resource specialists and other professionals.

Yoshimoto OG Basic Training
July 17th – 21st

This five day Yoshimoto O.G. training will focus on a data driven, clinical, multisensory, phonetic, teacher guided Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling in whole classroom, small group and one-to-one settings. Upon completing this course participants will have acquired the skills necessary to fully implement this data-driven solution for teaching reading to all students.
The course will cover the three levels of decoding and spelling: sound, syllable, and morphological. With the latter, introductory morphology, the emphasis will be on increasing the vocabulary for all children – general and special education students. Further, the system supports the outcomes within the Common Core.
Note: All training course materials, including extensive teacher resources, are included in the cost of the course.

The Associate level coursework of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) will be taught in two sessions: the 5 day training from June 26 – June 30 followed by a 3 day training July 31, August 1 & 2. (at LACS or a nearby location). Completion of the Associate level prepares individuals to teach one-on-one, and with any size group.

Karen Leopold, MS Ed, an Accredited Training Fellow of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE), holds four New York State teaching certifications: General Education N-6, English 7-12, Reading, and Special Education. She has taught in one-on-one and in group settings, and worked as the Multisensory Language Consultant for several private and public schools. She served as the Director of the Kildonan Teacher Training Institute for 7 years, and 3 years as the Director of Language Training at Camp Dunnabeck. Karen has provided extensive teacher training, conducted workshops, and presented at many conferences in the United States and Canada. She has published The Student Notebook I (Basic), and II (Advanced), which is geared toward the dyslexic student, and is coauthor of theLearning Cursive workbooks, Learning Print, and Conquering Spelling Demons I and II. Currently, she is serving as President of the Colorado Rocky Mountain Branch of the International Dyslexia Association and is on
the AOGPE Board of Trustees.

Orton-Gillingham is a research based sequential, multisensory method proven effective for over 80 years. The 32 hour course achieves the Classroom Educator certification to prepare teachers for implementing the Orton-Gillingham approach.
