Teacher Ed: Dyslexia and Learning Differences in the Classroom @ CHC

Are there students in your classroom that struggle with learning? Perhaps those students have a diagnosed or undiagnosed learning issue. In this teacher ed class, you will learn more about the types and signs of learning differences and the impact they can have on a student’s social and emotional well-being. Plan to attend so you can hear about classroom strategies that work and how you can create a supportive classroom environment for students with learning differences. Presented by Jeff Kozlowski, Head of Sand Hill School at CHC.

Jeff KozlowskiJeff Kozlowski has over 20 years of experience as an educator and champion of students, families and teachers. Before joining Sand Hill School, Jeff was Head of School at Fusion Academy in Walnut Creek. For Jeff, kids have always come first, and he wanted to be a teacher early on. He holds a Bachelor of Science in history and in special education, and he has a Master’s degree in educational leadership. He has been a mentor, a teacher, a school principal and Head of School at several locations—Principal at New Haven Youth and Family Services in Southern California working with at-risk adolescent boys, Director of Special Education at The Winston School in San Diego working with bright kids with learning differences. Jeff supports the promise and potential of every child and believes that “Every student is carrying something you can’t see.”

Chartwell Teacher Training Institute: Structured Literacy Certificate (Session 1) @ Chartwell School

The Chartwell Way: Structured Literacy Teacher Training Institute

There are two program options available to meet your needs. During the Morning Intensive, Chartwell faculty will train you to implement the successful methods that we have honed during the past three decades.

The Afternoon Practicum presents an opportunity for hands-on experience with struggling readers under the guidance of a Chartwell Master Teacher. Educators enrolled in the Afternoon Practicum will have the unique opportunity to practice their newly-acquired conceptual and foundational knowledge in an actual classroom setting while students will be able to benefit from a one-on-one reading tutorial and significantly increase reading strategies. This approach is known as The Chartwell Way.

You will earn a Chartwell Structured Literacy Certificate and Continuing Education Credits.

Two duplicate sessions of the morning and afternoon programs will be offered. Session 1 will run June 18-22.

Session 2 will run June 25-29.

2018 Slingerland® Institute Short Course: Spelling & Written Language @ Westmark School

Slingerland®’s 3-day course, suitable for classroom teachers and tutors, integrates phonics, encoding, morphology (bases, affixes), irregular words and writing connected text. The course covers strategies and techniques for incorporating handwriting, spelling, and written language across the curriculum content areas.

An introduction to written expressive language including phonics, encoding and spelling rules leading to independent written work. The historical and philosophical background of dyslexia and current research in the field of reading and written language will also be discussed. Techniques and practice in the following areas will be covered: oral language, phonics and blending skills, written expression and integrated auditory approach lesson plans. Teacher/participants will actively apply the techniques in practice sessions.

Specifically you will learn:

  • Knowledge of the historical and philosophical background of Specific Language Disability (dyslexia)
  • The history and development of multisensory structured instructional techniques
  • How to plan and integrate a language arts lesson beginning with the smallest unit and building to words and words within phrases and sentences Strategies for teaching encoding and spelling of regular and non-phonetic words
  • Current research about oral and written language Instructional strategies to increase students’ spelling and written language performance A systematic structure for encoding (blending) and vocabulary development
Twenty hours of classroom time.  Approved for 1.5 continuing education units through the University of San Diego.

Wilson Just Words® 2018 Workshop @ Courtyard Marriott, Sherman Oaks

Just Words® is an intervention (Tier 2) program for students in grades 4-12 and adults.  It provides direct and explicit teaching of “how English works“ for both decoding and spelling automaticity. The multisensory approach is designed for individuals who have mild to moderate gaps in their decoding and spelling proficiency but do not require intensive intervention. It provides a curricculm for the sophisticated study of word structure through the six syllable types in English and the most common Latin roots. Just Words is an appropriate intervention in daily small-group or small-class instruction.

This 10-hour workshop, co-sponsored by IDA-Los Angeles, provides the practice and guidance needed to effectively begin teaching the Wilson Just Words® curriculum. At the completion of the workshop, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the research base of the why and how of Just Words® instruction.
  • Understand the principles of instruction: explicit, sequential and cumulative instruction that incorporates review, repetition, feedback, and multisensory instruction to engage multiple learning styles.
  • Identify the skills taught in Just Words®: word study (phonemic awareness, six basic syllable types in English, spelling rules, common Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes), vocabulary study, and high frequency words.
  • Properly identify and group students.
  • Use the Instructor Manual’s Unit structure and materials, prepare a daily learning plan, and practice lesson activity procedures.
  • Administer Progress Checks at the beginning of each Unit and Unit Tests at the end in order to assess students’ progress.

It also strongly supports reading, writing, and language standards.

Fundations® Level Workshops provide the practice and guidance needed to effectively begin teaching the Fundations curriculum for the designated Level(s). The workshop includes: the principles of instruction; the skills taught in each Fundations level, including phonemic awareness, phonics and word study, vocabulary, high frequency words, fluency, comprehension, handwriting, spelling, and punctuation; and how to prepare a daily learning plan and practice lesson activity procedures.

These workshops are co-hosted by IDA- Los Angeles

Level K:  June 25, 9am – 3:30 pm

Level 1:  June 26, 9am – 3:30 pm
