The summer Slingerland® multisensory structured language instruction classes with practicum will be offered as an intensive 4-week training session at Hope Academy in Concord, CA June 16-July 13, 8:00am-4:00pm. This course is accredited through the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and IDA and are offered at three levels, described below. INTRODUCTORY LEVEL
This class is the core of the Slingerland training program. Participants will learn to use the Slingerland format, that supports the National Reading Panel’s key elements, to upgrade their teaching skills for better student performance in reading, writing and spelling.
SECOND LEVEL CONTINUUM
This class includes a brief, basic review of the introductory class, then an introduction and practice of more advanced techniques in the language arts continuum. The use of the dictation paragraph and the screening procedures for identifying students will also be presented.
THIRD LEVEL CONTINUUM/INTERN
This class is designed for a limited number of participants wishing to become staff teachers in Slingerland training classes. This class encompasses all learning in the introductory and second level classes as the participant learns how to organize, maintain and evaluate a summer session, its students and participants. Class instructor approval is required to take this class.
Participants may also enroll in the Third Level Continuum Class for more directed work with small groups of students. Daily lesson plans are developed to meet the needs of these students under the direction of the Slingerland Instructor.
Slingerland®’s 3-day course, suitable for classroom teachers and tutors, integrates phonics, encoding, morphology (bases, affixes), irregular words and writing connected text. The course covers strategies and techniques for incorporating handwriting, spelling, and written language across the curriculum content areas.
An introduction to written expressive language including phonics, encoding and spelling rules leading to independent written work. The historical and philosophical background of dyslexia and current research in the field of reading and written language will also be discussed. Techniques and practice in the following areas will be covered: oral language, phonics and blending skills, written expression and integrated auditory approach lesson plans. Teacher/participants will actively apply the techniques in practice sessions.
Specifically you will learn:
- Knowledge of the historical and philosophical background of Specific Language Disability (dyslexia)
- The history and development of multisensory structured instructional techniques
- How to plan and integrate a language arts lesson beginning with the smallest unit and building to words and words within phrases and sentences Strategies for teaching encoding and spelling of regular and non-phonetic words
- Current research about oral and written language Instructional strategies to increase students’ spelling and written language performance A systematic structure for encoding (blending) and vocabulary development
Just Words® is an intervention (Tier 2) program for students in grades 4-12 and adults. It provides direct and explicit teaching of “how English works“ for both decoding and spelling automaticity. The multisensory approach is designed for individuals who have mild to moderate gaps in their decoding and spelling proficiency but do not require intensive intervention. It provides a curricculm for the sophisticated study of word structure through the six syllable types in English and the most common Latin roots. Just Words is an appropriate intervention in daily small-group or small-class instruction.
This 10-hour workshop, co-sponsored by IDA-Los Angeles, provides the practice and guidance needed to effectively begin teaching the Wilson Just Words® curriculum. At the completion of the workshop, attendees will be able to:
- Understand the research base of the why and how of Just Words® instruction.
- Understand the principles of instruction: explicit, sequential and cumulative instruction that incorporates review, repetition, feedback, and multisensory instruction to engage multiple learning styles.
- Identify the skills taught in Just Words®: word study (phonemic awareness, six basic syllable types in English, spelling rules, common Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes), vocabulary study, and high frequency words.
- Properly identify and group students.
- Use the Instructor Manual’s Unit structure and materials, prepare a daily learning plan, and practice lesson activity procedures.
- Administer Progress Checks at the beginning of each Unit and Unit Tests at the end in order to assess students’ progress.

The Chartwell Way: Structured Literacy Teacher Training Institute
There are two program options available to meet your needs. During the Morning Intensive, Chartwell faculty will train you to implement the successful methods that we have honed during the past three decades.
The Afternoon Practicum presents an opportunity for hands-on experience with struggling readers under the guidance of a Chartwell Master Teacher. Educators enrolled in the Afternoon Practicum will have the unique opportunity to practice their newly-acquired conceptual and foundational knowledge in an actual classroom setting while students will be able to benefit from a one-on-one reading tutorial and significantly increase reading strategies. This approach is known as The Chartwell Way.
You will earn a Chartwell Structured Literacy Certificate and Continuing Education Credits.

2018 Orton-Gillingham Approach: Teacher/Tutor Training for Dyslexia and Literacy Instruction

The OG Approach is for implementation in a classroom, or in small group or individual tutoring. Participants in this 40-hour course will be eligible for Classroom Educator Level certification from the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE). For those desiring to be certified at the Associates Level, appropriate for 1–1 tutoring, this course will fulfill 40 of the 60 required hours of classroom instruction. The additional 20 hours will be taught July 9-11, 2018, at the same location for an additional cost.

Wilson Fundations® is a multisensory and systematic phonics, spelling, and handwriting program that benefits all K-3 students, in particular, those in a Tier 1 or Tier 2 setting. It thoroughly teaches the foundational skills of the California Common Core State Standards (print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, and fluency). It also strongly supports reading, writing, and language standards.
Fundations® Level Workshops provide the practice and guidance needed to effectively begin teaching the Fundations curriculum for the designated Level(s). The workshop includes: the principles of instruction; the skills taught in each Fundations level, including phonemic awareness, phonics and word study, vocabulary, high frequency words, fluency, comprehension, handwriting, spelling, and punctuation; and how to prepare a daily learning plan and practice lesson activity procedures.

About the class instructor, Nancy Cushen White, Ed.D.
Dr. Nancy Cushen White is a Clinical Professor at the University of San Francisco, Department of Pediatrics, a teacher, and a learning disabilities specialist. She has a private practice, assessing and remediating language based learning problems and consulting with both public and independent schools. She serves on the Board of the Slingerland Institute and is a certified instructor of Slingerland teacher training courses. A former member of the Board of Directors of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), she represents IDA on the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities and is the current editor of IDA’s online journal, The Examiner. Additionally, Dr. White has more than thirty years experience in public schools as classroom teacher and special education teacher with San Francisco Unified School District.

Traditionally offered as a 4-week period of intensive study with a practicum. After a brief, basic review of the introductory class, participants will be introduced to and practice more advanced techniques in the language arts continuum. The use of the dictation paragraph and the screening procedures for identifying students will also be presented.
Content Includes:
- Guided observation of the evaluative and prescriptive elements embedded in the daily plan Knowledge of how oral language skills relate to writing and reading skills
- Studying the vertical and horizontal use of the format for instruction
- How to integrate a new learning throughout the format
- Critical thinking skills needed for reading, writing and speaking
- Current research in all aspects of dyslexia
- How to administer and evaluate the Slingerland Screening materials

- Evaluations of participant lesson plans, materials and teaching stations
- Evaluations of delivery of planned lessons Assisting with the completion of forms for the Slingerland® Institute
- Preparation and delivery of lectures to participants
- Preparation of an orientation about dyslexia and the Slingerland® Approach
- Individualized requirements assigned by the Director
